Oxygen Level Decrease in Air from Climate Change

Oxygen Level Decrease in Air from Climate Change // Published on Feb 26, 2016

Combustion of fossil fuels causes oxygen to decrease in the atmosphere/ocean system. As does deforestation, exponential population growth and phytoplankton loss in the oceans from warming stratification limiting nutrients at the surface. It is often said that the oxygen in every second breath you take is produced by photo plankton, that are the true lungs of the planet. I discuss the extend of the oxygen decrease, which is more than you want to know. Please visit my website paulbeckwith.net and help support my videos/research (self-funded) via the Please Donate tab.

Catherine McKenna: ‘This is what the Paris Agreement ‎Means For Me‬ // Published on 2/25/2016

6896966969769769769797977979

Click here for video on Facebook.  Just 0:46 long.

We are in a climate system EMERGENCY. The exponential decline of Arctic sea ice and snow cover is darkening the region leading to increased absorption of sunlight and thus temperature amplification. This lowers the temperature difference relative to the equator making the jet stream get slower and wavier, and slowing the ocean currents.

Jet stream change leads to increased frequency, severity and duration of extreme weather events like extended droughts (California), heat waves and torrential rain events causing flooding (Calgary, Toronto). There is an enormous risk in the Arctic of methane bursts that would dwarf all human emissions since the industrial revolution, rendering human action futile if we pass these tipping points.

Paris was important to initiate the process of slashing global emissions to zero, but is only Leg #1 of a three-leg barstool. Leg #2 is regional cooling of the Arctic to prevent cascading amplifying feedbacks and stabilize jet streams and thus weather patterns. Leg #3 is removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere/ocean reservoirs to stabilize climate and prevent ocean acidity taking out phytoplankton at the base of the marine food web.

A barstool cannot stand with less than 3 legs. We must proceed with all three things as if our lives on this planet depend on it. Because they do.

Angry Climate 1: Humanity 0: Science of Catastrophe

Our Ongoing Climate System Destabilization // Published on Feb 24, 2016

The Arctic region average temperature is from 6 to 8 degrees Celsius (11 to 15 F) warmer than normal. Arctic sea ice extent maximum occurred a month early. Our climate system is breaking apart in front of our eyes. Ridiculously, the term “faster than normal” is still used to describe sea ice collapse, accelerating sea level rise and every other climate system parameter. Nothing is normal with our ongoing exponentially abrupt climate change…

Risk From Abrupt Climate Change is Enormous // Published on Feb 25, 2016

People (public, politicians, even scientists) are terrible at evaluating RISK. As a result, society makes many stupid choices and fails to worry and deal with the most serious problems. People need to worry a lot more about abrupt climate change, which dwarfs all other risks.
———- ———-

Usual favorite! As you all know, I love to be interviewed by Alex Smith, and in this episode, I get to follow heavy hitter, paleontologist Dr. Peter Ward [1] on Eco Shock Radio, ‘the expert on past mass extinctions, and maybe the present one‘, then joined by ‘climate scientist Paul Beckwith‘.  And there ‘is serious news about plankton, the tiny ocean plants that feed the seas, and provide most of the oxygen you are breathing right now‘.

Impatient listeners, can click to the 30:29 mark, to go right to my ample 28:21 segment, but I think the entire episode bears careful listening.  Thank you Peter and Alex!

———- ———-

Tonight, I got to listen in then meet with Andre Revkin of the DotEarth blog of the New York Times, at Carlton University here in Ottawa.  They have been running a series of lectures this month and next on “Bringing Research to Life”.  Tonight’s Discovery Lecture was titled “The New Communication Climate”.

I have been wanting to meet Andrew for a long time. We have connected by social media and email a few times in the past and I wanted to make sure he was up-to-speed on the ongoing Arctic Sea Ice slaughter, the jet stream disruption and the ongoing methane risks.

12421283_1210032959025273_765804274_n

I was extremely happy that he already knew most of this and about my group AMEG (Arctic Methane Emergency Group), having met Peter Wadhams (AMEG member and the UK’s top sea ice researcher) during the Vatican meetings with the Pope to get material for the encyclical.

I directed Revkin to this website and told him about my >100 YouTube videos on abrupt climate system change [2].

Andrew is a very engaging and knowledgeable speaker with over 3 decades of media experience. He has been in the Arctic four times, since, as he put it “the NYT does not have an Arctic bureau“.

12788265_1209976929030876_1871659354_n

He does get climate change. I discussed my three-legged bar stool analogy (zeroing carbon emissions, SRM to cool the Arctic, CDR to sustain life in the oceans) and also told him about my efforts with Norwegian colleagues at Gaia Engineering.

As he just said on Facebook, ‘Long but fascinating and fruitful day of student and faculty meetings and then discussions after my talk on the changing communication climate. Here with Chris Russill of Carleton University Journalism School and Paul Beckwith of AMEG (photo my Times colleague Ian Austen).

Healthcare System Has Serious Skin in the Game with Climate

Gannotta_globe

Relief Analysis recently published yet another outstanding podcast, titled ‘Episode 3: Rick Gannotta Interview – Curating Healthcare in a Rapidly Changing World‘.  I am mentioned prominently and referenced there (get to that in a moment) [1].

But first please take note that this stems from its founding interview with me, ‘Episode 1: Paul Beckwith Interview – Abrupt Climate Change and Relief Operations‘, which was followed equally nicely, with ‘Episode 2: Jennifer Hynes Interview – Embracing Abrupt Climate Change with a Humanitarian Spirit‘.  Nick is off to a great start, and Kevin Hester was recently recorded, and likely to print in full next week, as Episode 4 (clips are in this Episode 3)

While anyone would have far to go to equal Alex Smith’s Eco Shock Radio or Doug Bennett’s Unspun:  An Experiment in Truth-Telling (I am often on the first.  I was on the latter, as was Jennifer recently)

Rick Gannotta explored my proposition  in Episode 1, ‘that abrupt polar climate changes (e.g. a “Blue Ocean Event“) could increase the number of lower-latitude disasters by a factor of 10-20 times–and drew parallels with the medical response on par with the September 11, 2001 attacks, and a level of international collaboration required on par with the Kyoto Protocol.

Relief Analysis also says that ‘Gannotta’s “Be Here, Be Now” philosophy itself comes across strongly in the interview, as he is able to navigate a broad spectrum of issues and provide insights within a medical framework. His ability to curate issues of vital importance to the disaster management and humanitarian assistance community is truly formidable.’

I am glad to continue to be regularly engaged by Extinction Radio, most recently in Episode 47, Feb 12, 2016 with Peter Melton [2].  Go to 59:28 mark, where I discuss phytoplankton decline, marine life affect on oxygen, increasing carbon sinks and increasing phytoplankton, significant lack of information on this subject, and disruptions of surface currents and gulf stream.  15:51 long.  Full episode here:

[1] dk, I cannot recall a single time in the last half year or so, that when Jennifer and Paul both had webpages, that BOTH highlighted and hosted the same podcast and content, concurrently AS SEPARATE ACTIONS.  If this does not get your attention, then nothing should. Wendy Bandurski-Miller (‘Redreamer‘) was moreover, that much more vocal that Rick needed to be heard, so that makes three.  This guy is the real deal.  Delightful.

[2] Works extensively with Carolyn Baker, and most recently Dean Spillane Walker, and again continues to powerfully support Guy McPherson.

Global Ocean Phytoplankton in Severe Decline

Global Ocean Phytoplankton in Severe Decline // Published on Feb 9, 2016

Phytoplankton are about half the global biomass, and they are the base of the ocean food chain, and produce the oxygen in every other breath you take.

In 2010 a landmark paper reported that from 1950 to 2010 the global oceans suffered a severe drop in phytoplankton of almost 1% per year (40% drop). What has happened since then; find out in this video [1].

Paul and Guy Featured on Garry Null’s Progressive Commentary Hour

GaryNull-PCH_AlbumArt1

It is with great honor, that I was asked to join famed diet and nutrition expert Garry Null on his Progressive Radio Hour with Dr. Guy McPherson.  We discussed abrupt climate change and its impact on food, society, here on 02.02.2016 and is 58:45 long podcast.

Gary really zeros in on the truth here, and if a social influencer on diet–of his stature and significance–is asking two ardent scientists for their unvarnished opinions on abrupt climate change, you know its getting serious out there, if not widely accepted as undeniable fact to be reckoned with.

My last Six Paris videos, Tweeting Sharks and Shrunken Brains

4968978787878

Here are the last of the videos that I filmed in Paris. The COP21 that I attended there just over a month ago seems to be a vague and distant memory; not just for me but for a planet steamrolling itself over the edge of a cliff.

Every day we see signs of a climate system in chaos. Temperature in Brazil too warm and wet spreading Ziki carrying mosquitos to bite pregnant mothers causing severely shrunken baby heads. What a nightmare, over 4000 cases there, and now 4 in Canada (my guess is over 40 in the US, but nothing reported yet).

On a lighter note, I am literally following about a dozen sharks. They transmit their positions, and their movements are plotted out over time and tweeted out. They have even started following me:) Crazy world…

Ongoing Unravelling of our Climate System

etiyuyuyui5uiyyu.JPGArctic Ocean Blowtorch Attacks Sea-Ice // Published on Jan 24, 2016

Our climate system has destabilized. Our fossil-fueled emissions have changed the chemistry of our atmosphere and our oceans, changing the heat balance between the equator and Arctic. This has fractured the jet streams, and brings us closer to a new planet with zero snow and ice in the Arctic. Here is what is happening…
