Cognitive Distortions In Human Extinction Beliefs // Published on Feb 18, 2017
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a powerful technique often used by mental health practitioners to help patients deal with mental and emotional ailments. In CBT thinking, there are basically 10 main types of distorted thinking habits that derail people’s mental well-being.
Many so-called climate doomers (aka NTHE; Near-Term Human Extinction folk) congregate in social media echo chambers, absolutely convinced that 7.5 billion people will die within 18 months, 3 years, 9 years…
I think this is absolutely ridiculous, and discuss how this thinking typifies all 10 CBT distortions.
Hope you’re right Paul! 🙂 If the head shrinks are right our worries are postponed for another 40 years!? So why do we need the 3 legged bar stool!? It’s not methane just plain ole CO2 and feedback kickins! 🙂 Happy days are still here!

The NTHE folk don’t believe in geo engineering, which Paul seem to advocate as our last hope. I guess Paul would be a NTHE buff as well if he didn’t believe in giant bubble machines?

Hi Paul,
You likely won’t remember me but I sent you an article a couple of years back about the growing heat ‘blob’ in the pacific before the ‘monster’ El Nino struck last year. Not that it matters.
I’ve been a supporter of you since I watched your first video on Youtube. A defender as well when others have called you a crackpot, which was fairly often. But now I find myself puzzled by your last three videos about Guy McPherson. I’m not defending his position, by the way, just writing to ask you about your tone. It seems uncharacteristically angry. I’m not sure what to makle of them.
From what I can remember of your predilections, and I believe I’ve watched every one of your videos for the last few years, some more than once, your position was quite similiar to his. You were more introspective as to specific predictions than Guy, that’s so, but the overall message was quite similiar.
I’m curious as to what it was that caused you to make such an about face. Was it the new paper about methane release that was recently released,
https://www.usgs.gov/news/gas-hydrate-breakdown-unlikely-cause-massive-greenhouse-gas-release
Was it the new university you’re working for that you’ve mentioned on the last three videos? Your attacks seem a bit disengenious, honestly.
I don’t mean this to sound like an attack on yourself, I hasten to add. Just curious.

hi Paul, Jack’s question is a good one. Prior videos have collated you together with Guy….. any reason for taking this tack now? Cheers Mark
