James Hansen Talks Climate Change at COP21

Three videos of great Q/A after James Hansen’s riveting talk on climate change threats at COP21, my first day in Paris.

Needless to say, he was surrounded by people with great questions afterwards [1]. I told him that I have created 99 videos on abrupt climate change, including a Series of Nine on his open source paper, which was posted online in the summer.

He was impressed, and said he’d go here to find them.  Every bit helps.  170,300 views and still counting.  My next video is my jubilee, at number 100.  David tells me that 500,000 is not that far off as a result of this work and YOUR support.  I wholly agree.

After his talk, I had opportunity to speak with at length with him about Arctic temperature amplification, jet stream slowing and waviness and the risks of abrupt climate change from methane feedbacks.

Although he has been a strong supporter of Bill McKibbon’s group 350Now on the necessity of returning to global atmospheric CO2 concentrations of 350 ppm, Hansen would not specifically use the words Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR). I also spoke on the necessity of the 3 legs of the solutions stool: 1) Zero emissions as soon as possible, 2) Remove CO2 from the atmosphere with CDR, and 3) Apply Solar Radiation Management (SRM) to cool the Arctic.

‘At first I was not able to get into the basement room for this  talk in Paris off-site (Naomi Klein was on earlier) but I persisted and succeeded with only minutes to spare. I filmed the 45 minute talk including the Q/A and divided the footage into three parts for YouTube posting.’

AMEG has received a signficant plug from Bloomberg Business, shown here:  ‘How to Slow Climate Change With a Fake Volcano‘.  Anthropogenic Arctic Volcano, is a term I originated and is very relevant.  See my of post of same name, at Arctic News, from Thursday, January 10, 2013 here.

[1] dk.  Notice the off the chart ‘brain density reading‘ measures of 14,387 Becktabites, when Paul and James are standing next to each other.  Quite a sight.  This results in a figure seen once every 4.7 years in North America, and in Europe occurs less than once every 6.6 years among English speakers according to MeltonPedia.  these are really unique people.  All of them.

Paul thanks his donors for materially assisting him to get here.  Continued support is materially beneficial on assuredly frugal travel.  Moreover:  the website is also now at 13,000 views in just seven weeks, with nine-thousand in November.  We are preparing for easily 100,000 views by end of 2016.  That’s 28,000 unique visitors.

That equates to one in each thousand persons for all of the major non-American English speaking countries combined of Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, when Germany is added for good measure.  Not bad.

On My Way to Paris

12312175_1156655504363019_1174228114_n

Friends, I’d like to be more grand and dramatic and tell a great story, but its not the time now.  Paul notified me today, that he was on his way to Paris (details at link, and dk here).  He invited me to share about this, but upon short notice, late in the day, for his many fans and wonderful supporters,  instead this simple but important announcement–yes, he is not only going to Paris, but on the plane.

I have photos of his itinerary.  I was so very, very happy to hear this.  His credential, was reconfirmed by Stuart Scott, through Paul’s direct contact, very early GMT today, to the most esteemed Nick Breeze, who interceded at the very last minute on his Paul’s behalf.   Lets hearty thank them both.

Paul and I Skyped for an hour and twenty two minutes late last night in great detail, ‘tutelage’ as he called it, which combined in the same day he met David Suzuki at the rally, conspired to shift exactly whatever Paul needed to be able to do this, darn right inspired by both, as he tells it.  Its nice to be a part of his world.  And to know that I do not know, and wait to let him instead tell of it.

Twenty-Five Thousand Climate Marchers, Met David Suzuki

My Heartfelt Message to COP21 Negotiators // Published on Nov 29, 2015

COP21 is all about the policies, methods and timeframes that will ensure we slash carbon dioxide emissions and avoid global climate change chaos. My research tells me that zeroing emissions is only one of the three vitally important legs of the bar-stool…

This video is in response to a request from Canada’s Minister of The Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna.  Her video, where she asks for public comment, COP21 Canada Video Campaign, is here.  Link to her tweet.
———- ———-

Ottawa Calls for Climate Solutions and Climate Justice with 100% Renewable Energy

Today was a chilly and windy day in downtown Ottawa. Over 25,000 people gathered at City Hall and marched through the streets to Parliament Hill for a massive rally on “Climate Solutions and Climate Justice, 100% Possible”. Police that I spoke to said there were >10,000; in any case the gathering was the largest in Ottawa’s history for climate change.

12312407_1156192267742676_2094939185_n

The demand is for political leaders in Paris to agree to strong reductions of fossil fuel emissions, with the goal of reaching 100% renewable energy by the year 2050: namely zero fossil fuel emissions by 2050. In the first video that I took of the march, I am standing several feet high on the roadside barrier in front of the US Embassy in downtown Ottawa, capturing the incredible energy and passion of the vibrant marching mass of thousands of people passing me:

Climate Solutions & Justice Ottawa March (1/3) // Published on Nov 29, 2015

November 29th. Ottawa’s kick-off for action at the Paris COP21 climate change talks. I filmed the start of the march. Organizers, and others say 25,000 people attended; police said -10,000. Huge either way; largest in Ottawa’s history. Objective for society must be for zero emissions, as soon as possible…

Personally I think we are in an emergency situation, the likes the world has never seen before. I have thought this for about the last 5 years, with no doubts and 100% certainty. I think that we are undergoing early stages of abrupt climate change, that if continued unchecked will lead to an Arctic “blue-ocean event” by 2020 or sooner, and the enormous feedbacks will then carry us to a much warmer planet, greatly exceeding the 20C threshold rise that the politicians debate. A blue-ocean event guarantees that the frequency, severity and duration of extreme weather events will ramp up 10 to 20 times over what we see today.

12312528_1156244934404076_2077317639_n

Aerial Photograph at End of Rally (notice says 100%)

12309132_1156194124409157_1682560680_n

Zeroing emissions as-soon-as-possible, on an emergency footing is only one leg of the three legged bar-stool. It will alone not stop the nonlinear climate change that we have initiated. The second leg of the stool is Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR).

We must remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to stabilize the chemistry of the atmosphere and oceans to ensure a stable climate system, this is necessary to prevent the ocean acidification from taking out the phytoplankton base of the marine food chain, which would cause a collapse of the entire ocean ecosystem, followed by terrestrial biosphere collapse.

12319239_1156192437742659_663200757_n

The third leg of the stool, equally important is to cool the Arctic using Solar Radiation Management (SRM) methods, to restore the stability of the atmospheric and ocean circulation patterns. The bar-stool is precariously balanced, and about to tip over to an unrecognizably warmer planet.

In my second of three posted videos, I continued to freeze my butt and fingers off as I captured the bulk of the march towards Parliament Hill.

Climate Solutions & Climate Justice Ottawa March (2/3) // Published on Nov 29, 2015

This second video of three that I filmed today is of the thousands of people in the climate change march passing me as I balanced precariously on the concrete road barrier in front of the US embassy in downtown Ottawa. It was chilly and windy and I froze my butt and fingers off, but the sacrifice was well worth it.

From my vantage point, balancing precariously on the roadside barrier I continued to film and pay attention to the amazingly creative signs that people carried.

100% Clean. 100% Possible, 100% Solutions
Freeze tar sands expansion, Dude, where’s my rainforest?
Save Us. Save Me.
On Thin Ice SOS, With gold, we cannot buy another planet
Go Green, Climate is a Human Rights Issue

As the end of the march passed my location on the roadside buttress, I reflected on the enormous mass of humanity that had just passed me. It is these moments that give me great strength to continue on my climate education and social media path. I quickly took a shortcut to Parliament Hill to meet up with the crowd there.

12312162_1156191824409387_1402774317_n

I quickly headed to the steps directly in front of Parliament Hill, and found a great spot to continue filming just behind the podium set up for speakers. In my third and final video, I recorded some of the speeches and the crowd as they each held up white pieces of paper to allow a cameraperson atop a crane to take some memorable photos of the event.

Climate Solutions & Climate Justice Ottawa March (3/3) // Published on Nov 29, 2015

The third video of three that I filmed on the Ottawa Climate Change Rally. Over 25,000 people attended, according to media sources, -10,000 according to the police liaison officers that I spoke to. I filmed the crowd from atop the steps just in front the Parliament Building, iron barricades, and police carrying submachine guns. I asked them if these weapons were really necessary, being in open display? No reply, just a look that one does not ask.
———- ———-

All in all, it was an incredible day. Now, we need real action at COP21 in Paris. What can be simpler than a global price on carbon? Do we really need 40,000 people to go to a place like Paris to achieve this. We need real action to zero fossil fuel emissions as quickly as possible, not people in suits talking in slow motion, like the previous 20 COPs. Like I have said before:

We have had 20 COPs and achieved squat.
Can we have a lucky 21?
It wins in BlackJack,
Why not in climate?

12309142_1156194161075820_628966160_n

Guess Who I Met at the Rally.  No Less than Dr. David Suzuki!

Now, for the highlight of my day. At City Hall the incredible David Suzuki was the last speaker. He said that he spoke as a grandfather and an elder. After his call for the initiation of the march towards Parliament Hill he started walking and was surrounded by vast numbers of media. I kind of tagged along, and was a few rows behind him and the banners at the start of the march. As we proceeded towards Parliament Hill I thanked him for being in Ottawa, and introduced myself and my work.

We proceeded to talk for 5 to 10 minutes while walking in the march, on Arctic temperature amplification, jet stream slowing and waviness causing extreme weather events to increase in severity, frequency and duration and on the enormous risks of methane emissions from the permafrost and marine sediments in the Kara Sea and the Eastern Siberian Arctic Shelf.

He asked me what I thought of Guy McPhersons view that its game over for humanity in 2030. I said that humans, acting in concert with the best science and technology can become the largest braking feedback in the entire climate system, but we have reached the wall and must act immediately. Thus, I could not agree with Guy. He thought that Guy was wrong to take hope from people. I gave him and his assistant my business card after I had handwritten my new website paulbeckwith.net onto the card. I told him that I had filmed over 90 educational videos on climate change over the last several years, and he seemed impressed so I very much hope that he looks at some of them.

Regards, Paul

Extinction Radio, Podcast // Episode 36 11-29-2015. Starts at 0:01:56.

This week, Peter Melton again interviewed me, in my recurring chat with Extinction Radio for their ‘All Things Climate’ feature.

Paul discusses COP21 and Paris.  Also includes Conversation Between Nafeez Ahmed and Peter Melton (prior at Facebook, is here).  Canadian Government roles.  2050 is too late.  Stored carbon will dwarf human emissions.   Powers that be, acquiescing to business as usual, in not addressing severity of the situation.  Extreme weather events.  Cold blob.

Building materials in wood versus steel and concrete, carbon imprint.  Crop failures, biofuels.  Tipping Points in human behavior.  Australian leadership, related to UK, Canada.  Canadian voters.  What would a sustainable world look like.  Elephant in the room. More on Stewart Scott project in Paris.  John Cook of Skeptical Science.  Top down discussion of major factors in climate, 1C/methane.  Three legged stool:  zero carbonCarbon Dioxide Removal, and Solar Radiation Management (SRM).

Going to Paris, New Disaster Relief Analysis Site, Interview, Norway, Video

I have lots to share since much is happening, very quickly:

Je suis Paris!  I am going!  To COP 21

Then to Norway!  To work on climate solutions!

I have confirmation on a badge giving me full conference access for Week 1, and will permanently cross my fingers to improve my Week 2 chances, but if the second week does not pan out I have lots to do outside the venue.

Here is more information on the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, aka COP 21 (French version).  November 30th to December 11th.

CUTp0AdVAAAfXGW

This COP is a huge deal for the planet. We have had 20 COPs, and atmospheric CO2 concentrations are still rapidly rising. Perhaps this will be lucky 21 for the planet. Blackjack anybody? As if this COP was not already a big deal BEFORE last week’s woeful attack. Security will be very tight.

I will share more details in the next week or so, as I become aware of more details. You know that with Beckwith you get the unfiltered version of everything. But in a nutshell, through the magic of UPSI founder Stuart Scott, I will be assisting in production of his film covering the event. Perhaps I will be able to turn the tables on people that are interviewing me, by interviewing them immediately afterwards!

Alert followers will recall that I was beside Stuart in many press conferences on the Arctic, methane, and the economics of climate change in Peru, late last year at COP 20.  This year’s COP will be different. A tipping point in human understanding, behavior and action on abrupt climate change seems to be in the air. If not now, then when? We cannot wait any longer.

I wanted to announce this Europe trip to you before, as each day the POP (probability-of-Paris for me) increased slightly, but I did not want to be like ‘the boy who cried wolf’.

Now POP =1. It is definite. 100%. But what is not definite is how I will pay for all my expenses. I am bringing a sleeping bag and will cut costs to the bone, but one still need bones. I have some support, but any financial support that you could spare is greatly appreciated. A huge thank you to those of you who have already donated to Paul, through PayPal on the above right menu on my website. If it is specifically for Paris, please let me know that.

When in Paris I will participate in talks and hopefully in press conferences, film interviews and events and be filmed, interview and get interviewed with scientists, politicians, decision makers and climate solution investors. I will try to get something out to you each day.

I was recently extensively interviewed over Skype by Nick from North Carolina, USA; a Disaster Management Relief Specialist and Humanitarian. He uploaded my recorded thoughts onto his new site, and posted a blog that was spotlessly written. Solid as a rock.  Have a read and listen to Relief Analysis, Operational Analysis on Emerging Disasters, at this link.

My main message to the Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance Community is that “We are not in a steady state any longer. We are in a period of abrupt climate change. Right now. Today.”
—– —–

The podcast interview with me is not embedded quite yet, so eager listeners can hear it on iTunes or Windows Media, by simply downloading the full 45 minute interview here [dk will help Nick set it up on SoundCloud.  Strongly suggested.  Easy to do.  Sorry, WordPress does not recognize this basic file type, due to obvious security controls].

Highlights from Nick’s ReliefAnalysis.com blog:
The “Godzilla” El Nino is stressing humanitarian and disaster relief operations worldwide; fires are raging in Alaska, Siberia and the rain forests of Indonesia; Hurricane Patricia’s recent explosion to a Category 5+ monster cyclone was almost unprecedented … all of these events are only the beginning of a rapid acceleration into uncharted territory … a tipping point into an entirely new climate state for our planet.

Combine the additional water vapor in Earth’s atmosphere’ (about 7% more water vapor per degree Celsius of temperature rise), a wavy and erratic fractured jet stream, and a potential catastrophic reduction in Arctic Sea Ice and spring snow cover, and I foresee an increase in frequency, duration, and severity of disaster-level weather events on the scale of 10-20 times greater (not a typo) than today in the not-so-distant future.’  Also, strange things are happening in locations they did not happen before, for example torrential rains in Middle Eastern deserts, and large snowfalls in the driest desert in the world (Atacama Desert).

As I stated many years ago, “What happens in the Arctic does not stay in the Arctic. Not like Vegas.” My quote, used by many others including John Kerry recently.

Blue Ocean EventRefers to the loss of the majority of Arctic Sea Ice during the summer melt season, resulting in vast expanses of open waters in the Arctic Ocean. Sea ice is currently in a fragile state.  My view is thata Blue Ocean Event is likely to occur as early as 2020, or even … albeit with low probability … the summer of 2016, depending on Arctic weather conditions.

Jet Stream Alteration:  When flowing strongly and mostly west-to-east (called zonally, versus north-south (meridionally)), the Jet Stream essentially guides weather patterns. With the Arctic warmer, the temperature difference between the tropics and the Arctic is less’ … suggesting an increase in the frequency, severity and duration of disaster occurrences by 10-20 times once this occurs. …

Uninhabitable Hot Zones:  Following a Blue Ocean event, the southern latitudes will begin to heat significantly, as there is less of a temperature differential between the Arctic and the tropics, and heat builds steadily at low latitudes instead of being transported northward. Some hot and humid areas of Southeast Asia, India, and the Middle East could actually be rendered uninhabitable for our species as “wet bulb” temperatures soar towards 35C (95F)—the limit of the human body’s ability to regulate its own temperature. …

Methane Hydrates and the Paleo Perspective:   ‘… An ominous wildcard looms deep in the waters of the Arctic Ocean and in the permafrost of the Arctic Circle. Methane hydrates—the decayed legacy of flora and fauna of eons ago—could potentially be unleashed from the ground to the atmosphere if temperatures warm enough. A large methane release … could unleash enough greenhouse gasses to tip the planet into an entirely new climate regime. Or perhaps not entirely new from a geologic perspective—methane eruptions have happened before. 56 million years ago, methane releases warmed the Earth an incredible 5C in 13 years.

Non-Linear Sea Level Rise:  A Blue Ocean Event would accelerate“non-linear” rates of melt in Greenland and Antarctica, ‘causing a rapid rise of Sea Level much faster than projections by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)’. …  Island nations, and coastal communities around the planet are extremely vulnerable. ‘Pulses of meltwater from Greenland could further slow the Gulf Stream, causing major changes global weather patterns.’
—– —–

I am going to Norway after Paris. I am working on climate solutions, and meeting many politicians, companies, and decision makers. David tells me that on this website the vast majority of European visitors and views are from Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. Since Germany and France are so vast, this is quite a Scandinavian concentration. This indicates the great awareness and concern for our Earth in the Baltic nations, and shows their motivation to innovate, improve, and reduce emissions.

Since I am more than an academic, scientist, influencer, and soon to be author, this European trip is a crucial part of my work, and your help (any amount) is appreciated. Thus far, the cost of my website is about 40% covered, and this trip will ding my finances. Austa la vista, baby.  If the NTHE (near-term-human-extinction) crowd is correct (and I do not think they are) then we will not need retirement savings anyways.
———-

Two more things, in case I have not already said enough:  much work continues to be done on the site. Most recently we made large updates to (L to R on Menu tab):  Basic Chronology, the major tab on Videos, my Laser Work in a past life, My two patents, the elephant in every room: global Population, Groups AMEG and CMOS.  If you missed my heavily filled out Book section from three days ago, you might be missing out.  A fan favorite.
———-

I have begun writing a book, seeking to clearly explain abrupt climate system change in easy, simple to understand terms.  David is coaching me to hold off, until, as he puts it “I clean my entire kitchen, pots, and pans as it were, before preparing a big new meal.” I am resisting his often excellent advice, on this one.

Plotting a book gives me energy. Great energy. And moreover, it gives me a solid, definite, knowable place to put my ideas. As great as Twitter, Facebook, and a website are, there is much excitement in me to write, to contrast my consummate reading.
———-

My latest video came out a few days ago.  See Beckwith is Back – Abrupt Climate System Update.  Our webpage has had 2,200 views in the last three days as a result of this.

Both the illustrious Jennifer Hynes and I are shown in Marc Haneburght’s excellent recent video, shown here.  Strongly suggest you NOT miss the potent, bone chilling moment where Rignot says “That’s not holy sh_t, it’s worse than that’ clip, here.  Continues with Jenn, then me at 23:52 mark.  The real money shot for me, is here at the 24:53 mark and continues from there to 26:53.  This is the real deal.
———-

[Some viewers have rightly noted technical imperfections in the recording of Paul’s videos–jitter, audio, etc.  But at the same time, you cannot have an off road suspension AND a high speed racecar that can take curves at 200 mph in one place (adaptive versus solid if not stiff).

Choices.  Some also LOVE the informality, and the live interaction.  Be advised, support is being given soon to Paul, separately from donations, for a studio setting in his basement. Details will follow. Just know that with Paul-4.0 evolution is quickly occurring.  dk]

Onwards and upwards,

Beckwith is Back, New Video: Abrupt Climate System Update

I am back, after a long video hiatus. I have been chomping at the bit to film, but held off to essentially finish this website.  Like many projects that start out small, they can become nonlinear like the climate.  My web/coach/guru/Yoda in this project was the wonderful David Korn.  I cannot thank David enough.
