Climate Restoration with Carbon Dioxide Removal / Published on Feb 14, 2018

Slashing global fossil fuel emissions is necessary, but no longer sufficient to restore our climate to stability. The good news is that we are not defenceless. To restore climate stability it is essential that we also deploy CDR (carbon dioxide removal) to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Following up on my last video, I discuss key technologies to achieve this, like enhanced weathering, DAC (direct air capture), biochar, and ocean fertilization. Trying all these makes sense, although my money is on the latter being the most promising.

Emergency situations demand emergency responses. As abrupt climate change careens out of control, weather extremes are taking out cities (even nations) while politicians and governments talk tough but continue to do squat on reducing fossil fuel emissions. We’ve left it too late with fossil fuel appeasement and ineffective half-measures. We MUST now take emergency action to have any hope of avoiding utter chaos. We MUST actively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Why does the jet stream exist? How does if form? What controls it’s location and behaviour (latitude, length and amplitude of its waves)? What do zonal and meridional mean? Positive and negative vorticity?

Why are there many streaks of higher velocity within? Why is it becoming more fractured, and why are loops and whirls detaching from it? When we lose Arctic sea ice what will the jet stream become? Will it stabilize to another pattern or become totally chaotic? Will it even exist?

Hot Humid Wedge Slices Through Dark Frigid Arctic // Published on Feb 2, 2018

A large mass of warm humid air from the North Atlantic is driving a wedge (ridge of the jet-stream) into the 24-hour darkness of the Arctic nearby the North Pole, in the dead-of-winter. Frigid Arctic temperatures are brought to above freezing, further stunting sea-ice growth. The low pressure “eyes” of these cyclones reach 951 mb; the same as the recent “weather bomb” of the east coast of the US. I show you the easy-to-use Earth Nullschool tool to track the jet-stream, polar vortex, temperatures, pressures, moisture and clouds.

Elaborating on my last video; I take a cold, hard look at the reality of vanishing Arctic sea-ice. All signs point to an Arctic in collapse. Cold air is flooding out of the Arctic, pushing the jet stream far south, putting North America in a highly variable deep freeze that will be seen in a few years as a “last gasp” Arctic “death rattle”.

Unfortunately, our climate is highly nonlinear, and we have already crossed thresholds. The Arctic is the Achilles Heel or lynchpin of the entire system, and it is undergoing convulsions.

I give detailed diagnostics on Arctic sea-ice extent, area, thickness, dynamics, status, and fragility. The miserable prognosis is near certainty as we head to complete end-of-summer melt-out over the Arctic Ocean Basin.

As the ice goes, the global atmospheric circulation (jet streams, Hadley, Ferrel, Polar, Rossby) waves, and ocean circulation continues to reconfigure. Soon, Greenland will be the last Arctic bastion of ice and cold.

As jet streams circle the Earth dictating weather patterns and becoming slower and wavier from climate change, they are more often thrust upwards by mountains and land/ocean temperature differences. This causes Sudden Stratospheric Warming, and can split and/or displace the Stratospheric Polar Vortex. This in turn, feeds back to amplify/fracture/slow the Rossby Waves and increase the severity/frequency/duration and location of extreme weather events and overall climate mayhem.

What do all these crazy brain-fart conspiracy theory ideas have in common? If an otherwise intelligent, normal person believes in one of these screwy theories, then it is extremely likely that they have fallen for the whole gamut of nuttiness.

So what is a sure bet? It is that they all deny human caused fossil fuel emissions that increase greenhouse gases are causing climate change and freaky extreme weather. Guess who loves this nuttiness and confusion? It’s fossil fuel companies. The new climate denial is to produce slick videos on all this shite and use this propaganda to warp the minds of the masses. Of all people. I know highly educated, wildly successful business people and professionals who have fallen hook, line, and sinker for all these fairy Tales.

In the past, these crazy ideas could be ignored by scientists, engineers, technicians, academics, main stream media, etc. and they would die a quick death, with minimal following and little effect. NOT ANY LONGER.

Now, ignoring these brain spasm fairy Tales allows them to build up, unchallenged, on social media and swamp out any logic and knowledge and expertise and realism on the topic. This is extremely dangerous, and has been driving our society and planetary support systems into freefall to oblivion. If allowed to continue, there is absolutely no hope for continuance of life, let alone civilization on our planet.

Is it time for climate intervention? I discuss topics from the last day of AGU2017, such as Solar Radiation Management, Arctic Ice Management, and Carbon Dioxide Removal. My big gripe is that people (including scientists) always talk about the risks of doing these things without any comparison to the risks (much greater, in my view) of not doing these things. Finishing off the conference was a great session on the important role that comedy can play in communicating science.

Winter temperatures seem to gyrate from extreme cold to extreme warmth, and back again, in an endless repeating cycle. When this gyration passes through the freezing point there is frost, snow, melt, rain cycling repeatedly, wreaking havoc on roads, rail lines, bridges, buildings, water pipes, animals and plants. Infrastructure and wildlife suffer greatly, and there are huge temperature contrasts greatly increasing the frequency, severity, and duration of extreme weather events. Why?

Dissection of a Disaster: California Debris Flows // Published on Jan 11, 2018

I discuss how a sequence of many cascading events (worsened by climate change) resulted in horrendous debris flows (different from flash floods, mudslides, and landslides).

Heavy spring rains in 2017 stimulated rapid vegetation growth (grasses, bushes, trees); baking summer drought killed off much of this vegetation, and intense wildfires consuming this bone-dry plant material continued into December charring the hills.

Heavy rains in early 2018 on the burn scars ran down hills causing debris flows (water, mud, rocks, boulders) devastating towns and blocking major highways.
